Welcome to Black Current News!
Black Current News debuted on Substack’s Rising News Leaderboard within hours of launch
Hello,
Welcome to Black Current News - a new news platform dedicated to covering the stories that matter across Britain and beyond, with Black perspectives front and centre.
You’re among the first to receive this - thank you for being part of the early community.
How’s this going to work?’, I hear you ask. Well: Every week, our In Focus newsletter roundup will bring you a digest of news affecting Black and marginalised communities - stories that mainstream outlets often under-report or miss entirely. Think of it as your weekly pulse check, curated with our communities in mind, starting this week.
Alongside In Focus, you can expect regular, original journalism from Black Current News: reports, investigations, features, op-eds and cultural analysis that go deeper into the issues shaping our lives.
These will drop at least every two weeks because good journalism takes time, care and rigour; as we say across the Jamaican diaspora: “nothing before its time”.
For now, you can read most Black Current News dispatches for free and if you feel moved to support, there’s an option to pay. Every contribution helps ensure this space for independent Black journalism thrives.
Since announcing my departure from The Independent, the response has been incredible. Within hours of that announcement, Black Current News even debuted on Substack’s Rising News Leaderboard, among the top new titles in the UK!
It’s a humbling sign that this space is already resonating with readers who want more variety, depth, accountability and cultural truth in their news.
Please believe that this isn’t just another newsletter or blog. Black Current News is about creating an independent record, a living archive and a space where our voices are prioritised.
I’ll also be taking you with me to key moments on the ground - from community gatherings to landmark events - because our culture, history, lives and times deserve to be seen and remembered.
Thank you for joining at the start of this journey.
Please do spread the word - forward this to a friend, share it online and invite others to sign up.
‘Til next time…walk good,
Nadine
