Black Current News founder shortlisted in Georgina Henry Prize for Digital Innovation
The independent platform, founded by journalist Nadine White, is recognised for its innovative approach to amplifying Black stories and perspectives online
Black Current News has been named on the shortlist for the prestigious Georgina Henry Award for Digital Innovation.
The recognition highlights founder Nadine White’s pitch for Black Current News - a new digital platform dedicated to telling Black stories in real time and amplifying perspectives often overlooked in mainstream media.
This initiative supports innovative journalism projects that demonstrate impact, originality and a commitment to public interest storytelling. Judges look for new ideas or approaches that push the boundaries of digital reporting.
“This recognition means a great deal,” said Nadine.
“Black Current News is still in its early stages but it’s already proving there’s a real appetite for authentic, independent reporting on the issues that matter most to our communities.
“Given what’s going on in Britain - including upsurges in race hate crimes, emboldening of the far-right and mass redundancies across newsrooms - platforms that amplify marginalised stories are as important as ever”.

Launched over the summer with a soft debut at City Hall, Black Current News delivers sharp, culturally rooted journalism covering Black Britain and the wider diaspora - from politics and inequality to culture, faith and entertainment.
The platform blends reporting, commentary, regular dispatches and multimedia storytelling to provide context, depth and accountability in stories that shape everyday lives.
Since its hard launch in October, Black Current News has grown rapidly, reaching a quarter of a million views on Instagram and recording 103.5% audience growth in the past fortnight.
This recognition follows its recent appearance among the top 50 global news start-ups on Substack, underscoring its growing reach and relevance.
The award was set up to honour Georgina Henry, who was a founding member of Women in Journalism, former deputy editor of the Guardian and head of Guardian.co.uk, before her death in February 2014.
Running for 11 years, the annual prize supports the brightest new media ideas with a cash reward and a boost for their project.
It is backed by Women in Journalism and sponsored by leading media lawyers Wiggin LLP.
The Georgina Henry Award ceremony will take place on 12 November 2025 at London’s Underglobe Theatre.
